By Michael McGarry
Thinking about a holiday to Australia? Or perhaps moving to East Coast Australia? Knowing what life is like in another country is a must do before you make the big decision. Here a few tips and pieces of advice which you can use to get settled into an Australian way of life. If you want to know loads more about life in Australia including customs, religion and language, click on the link at the bottom of the page for the ultimate guide to East Coast Australia.
The People
Australian people have often been described as ‘laid-back’. In other words in the main Australian people are friendly and very hospitable. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule in any country but you will find that Aussies are very welcoming and enjoy showing others around their country or town. Country people in Australia (those that live outside the cities) are often very ‘laid-back’. Their main concerns are the weather and what’s happening on the weekend or who won the football.
Despite a popular myth that Australians live in the outback, this couldn’t be further from the truth. More than 75% live in cities and cosmopolitan areas along East Coast Australia. This means most Aussies enjoy an urban lifestyle.
There also some interstate rivalries. Friendly rivalries of course mainly between Queensland New South Wales which culminates in a rugby league football game known as the State of Origin. Three games are played in the middle of the year and they really are a show of loyalty. There is also some friendly rivalry between New South Wales and Victoria. There has never been a civil war in Australia though and there is never likely to be.
Australia is a fair, diverse and egalitarian society that enjoys a peaceful lifestyle and giving people a fair go. As we have residents from all over the world Australian people have some shared values and some not shared depending on cultural differences. This should not viewed negatively as diversity of values makes living or visiting Australia that much more interesting.
Australia and the law
Australian law is based on the English Westminster system. We do not have a death penalty but any criminal offending is dealt with according to a court of law. Australia has a commonwealth police force (The Australian Federal Police) and each state has a police service that enforces criminal legislation. Australia also has civil courts however we are not known to be a litigious society. Juveniles (youths) can also be dealt with by courts however the age cut offs differ across states e.g. In Queensland you are dealt with as an adult in criminal law once you turn 17.
You cannot legally drink or purchase alcohol or purchase or supply tobacco products until you are 18. There are laws which prohibit littering, possessing knives in public and against animal cruelty and neglect.
Climate
Australia enjoy an enviable lifestyle. Despite some myths the country’s climate ranges from hot monsoon storms to snow in the southern highlands of New South Wales and Victoria during winter. The climate can be harsh with droughts, floods and the odd cyclone but this is rare. In the main the climate of Australia is benign and enjoyed by many hence why our beaches are very popular. The best climate is arguably to be found on East Coast Australia.
Australian culture
Australian culture is very difficult to define and describe. Australians love sport so in many ways we have a unique and deep sporting culture especially enjoying cricket, rugby league and rugby union as well other sports such as soccer, hockey, swimming, tennis etc. Australia consistently performs well at summer Olympics which is a great achievement for a country of a relatively small population compared to bigger nations.
Australia also a rich arts culture. As a country we have produced famous world renowned artists such as Brett Whitely, Norman Lindsay, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.
In addition we have had notable writers such as Patrick White, Peter Carey, Judith Wright, Tim Winton and many more. The Australian National Gallery is in Canberra and often has international exhibitions of world class standard.
Population
Australia has a population of about 21 million with over 43% of these people wither being born overseas or a one parent who was born overseas. Most of the population lives on the east coast whilst some have ventured into the more remote areas like Alice Springs. The first Australians are the indigenous people known as Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders who have inhabited this continent for around 40 000 years perhaps even longer. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are distinct but both have rich cultures and traditions which significantly contribute to Australian society.
Summary
The Australian way of life is a rather good one. It’s about freedom, equality of opportunity and enjoying a day off at he beach or having mates around. Australia is a peaceful country, tolerant in the main of all people and welcomes those who want to visit or live here.
